Street Poets Community Center
Street Poets, Inc. is a non-profit organization that uses poetry and music to create a sense of community. The new home of Street Poets in South Los Angeles is an innovative concept design that serves as an asset to the community and a new neighbor to the adjacent middle school.
The Site
The concept design is centered around creating spaces that meet both current and future needs. The new facility features a public gathering space that can accommodate poetry readings, presentations, and other public events. In addition, there is a fully equipped music studio to foster creativity and enhance the organization's artistic output.
Front Courtyard
The outdoor space is an essential part of the new design, featuring a reclaimed courtyard for medicine circles and dialogue sessions. This outdoor space serves as a tranquil oasis that allows members of the community to come together and share their thoughts and ideas.
Community Spaces
The interior space are designed to provide a mix of private and shared workspaces. The office space is situated in an interior mezzanine, while the workshop spaces provide ample room for art and writing activities. The design includes a library wall, which offers a vast collection of books and other materials that serve as a resource for community members.
Poet Perch
One of the most exciting features of the new design is the exterior mezzanine known as the Poet Perch. This space offers spectacular views of the downtown LA skyline and serves as a unique location for community members to gather and appreciate the cityscape.
